MPR Deputy Speaker Bambang Pacul on MK Ruling over Gibran: ‘Let’s Take It Easy for Now’
MPR Deputy Speaker Bambang Wuryanto, also known as Bambang Pacul, has commented on the Constitutional Court (MK) ruling concerning the education requirements for Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s candidacy for vice-president in the 2024 presidential election.
Bambang said he did not want to rush to judgement on the ruling. In his view, the matter was not yet before the MPR.
“It hasn’t come to the MPR. Let’s take it easy for now. Just follow the process. The ball isn’t in the MPR’s court yet,” Bambang said at the parliamentary complex on Thursday (8 October).
The PDI-P politician urged all parties to follow due process. Pacul said the power of the House of Representatives (DPR) and the MPR lay in their meeting procedures, but added that he could not speculate.
“The MPR leadership is guided by the Constitution and the law. We can’t speculate,” he said.
On Tuesday evening (6 October), the MK delivered its ruling in case No. 01/PHPU.PRES-XXIV/2026 concerning the 2024 presidential and vice-presidential election results dispute.
The Court said it could not accept a petition by Denny Indrayana, one of whose requests was to disqualify Gibran Rakabuming Raka as Indonesia’s vice-president.
The petitioners were the Independent Election Monitoring Committee (KIPP), the Ummat Party, former Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Denny Indrayana, six residents belonging to the Forum of Retired TNI Soldiers, M Subhan, Bonatua Silalahi and Tiurma MS Sihombing.
However, based on evidence presented during the hearings, the MK said it had found no document showing that Gibran held a diploma confirming he had completed education overseas equivalent to senior high school (SMA) or its equivalent.
The MK referred this legal finding to other institutions for follow-up.
