MPR Deputy Chairperson Reviews Legal Challenge Over West Kalimantan Quiz Competition Controversy

MPR Deputy Chairperson Eddy Soeparno stated that the institution respects the legal process concerning a lawsuit over the Four Pillars Quiz Competition in West Kalimantan, which had sparked public controversy. Eddy said the MPR would review the lawsuit filed by lawyer David Tobing and respond according to applicable regulations.

He added that the MPR had resolved the issue involving SMAN 1 Pontianak through amicable means, with the school accepting second place and supporting SMAN 1 Sambas to advance to the national round. ‘As previously stated by MPR leadership, the controversy with SMAN 1 Pontianak was resolved amicably and with mutual understanding,’ Eddy said.

Regarding the controversial judges, Eddy noted that internal evaluations would determine any actions against officials who did not meet expectations. ‘The issues that arose have been resolved satisfactorily. Any action taken by MPR leadership against those who did not perform their duties as expected will be an internal matter,’ he added.

The first hearing for the lawsuit is scheduled for 2 June 2026. Lawyer David Tobing filed the case against the MPR, two judges, and the event’s master of ceremony, alleging unlawful conduct that harmed several parties. He claims the judges and MC acted unprofessionally, violating Article 1365 of the Civil Code. Tobing seeks the dismissal of judges Dyastasita Widya Budi and Indri Wahyuni, and a ban on MC Shindy Luthfiana from official state events at all levels.
