Deputy Chairman of the MPR RI, Lestari Moerdijat (Rerie), has stated that the option of online learning as one of the government’s efforts to save fuel oil (BBM) consumption must be prepared thoroughly to ensure the teaching and learning process yields the expected results.

“A number of comprehensive technical steps, synchronising policies between ministries and local governments, must be taken to ensure that no child loses their right to education in the implementation of online learning policies,” said Rerie in a written statement on Tuesday (24/3/2026).

It is known that the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK), Pratikno, last week stated that fuel-saving strategies would include operational efficiency in office buildings and schools.

Specifically for efficiency in schools or the education sector, the government plans to reimplement the online learning method that was applied during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Rerie, the fuel-saving plan by changing the learning method must be truly understood by its implementers in the field.

The experience of implementing distance learning (PJJ) during the COVID-19 pandemic, said Rerie, must serve as a lesson.

At that time, added Rerie, several challenges emerged, including teachers not being ready to carry out PJJ, parents being burdened by the online method, and ultimately the quality of student learning declining.

“Do not let the same mistakes be repeated. Therefore, it is important to prepare it thoroughly,” said Rerie, who is also a member of Commission X of the DPR RI.

In addition to human resource readiness, explained Rerie, the readiness of supporting facilities and infrastructure related to digital infrastructure must also be ensured.

In 2025, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) has distributed interactive digital boards (PID), laptops, and external hard drives to 288,865 educational units.

The distribution of these devices is complemented by providing internet access to 8,152 educational units, as well as electricity services for 2,389 educational units.

Moreover, Rerie believes that teaching staff must be ensured to have the skills to operate and manage these devices.

The senior member of the NasDem Party’s High Council hopes that the central and local governments, as well as society, can build strong collaboration to ensure the implementation of PJJ runs well.

“Because the continuity of quality teaching and learning processes for every child of the nation is very important to realise a competitive successor generation in the future,” emphasised Rerie.
