Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) RI Lestari Moerdijat stated that collective commitment is necessary as an effort to realise the values fought for by RA Kartini in the present time, as part of determining the direction of the nation’s journey.

According to her, women today are still far from the spirit of freedom of thought like the values brought by RA Kartini. Therefore, strong collective commitment is needed to realise women’s emancipation in the current era.

“Emancipation is not merely about being allowed to study, but also about enabling women to realise their aspirations,” said Lestari in Jakarta on Wednesday.

She opined that there is still much work to be done by all parties to realise the values fought for by RA Kartini.

According to her, every Kartini Day momentum must serve as a reminder of the efforts that have been made to realise that Kartini spirit.

“How we collectively find the root problems that can reduce gender gaps and determine the nation’s direction together,” she said.

The Women’s Organisation of Taman Siswa, according to her, was founded on 3 July 1922 in Yogyakarta by Nyi Hadjar Dewantara. She stated that Nyi Hadjar also fought in the education sector, especially since Taman Siswa was called a wild school by the Dutch colonisers.

“Nyi Hadjar Dewantara fought against the Dutch colonisers through education and was one of the initiators of the first Women’s Congress in Yogyakarta amid the social constraints from the Dutch colonisers,” said Tri Yulianti.
