MPR Chairman Reveals Try Sutrisno's Message Before Passing Away

MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani attended the funeral prayer procession for the sixth Vice President of the Indonesian Republic, Try Sutrisno. Muzani revealed Try Sutrisno’s message whilst still alive regarding the amendment of the 1945 Constitution.

“He spoke to us during Eid last year, expressing his wish that before he passed away, there would be a fifth amendment to the 1945 Constitution and he wanted it done before his death,” Muzani told reporters at the Grand Mosque of Sunda Kelapa, Central Jakarta, on Monday (2 March 2026), as cited from detikNews.

“I took his message and instruction very seriously as the leader of the MPR at that time,” he added.

Muzani said Try had instructed that the amendment be conducted to preserve national unity. According to him, Try wanted the amendment to be carried out to ensure the continuity of a better Indonesia.

“He wanted the amendment to be done to preserve unity, to maintain togetherness and to ensure Indonesia’s better future,” Muzani added.

Muzani remembered Try Sutrisno as a person who devoted his thoughts and efforts to the interests of the nation and state until the end of his life. He said the MPR continues to study the message from Try Sutrisno.

“All the thoughts, efforts and time of the late former leader continue to be studied and examined further by the People’s Consultative Assembly. Everything was dedicated to the interests of the nation and state until the end of his life,” he concluded.

As is known, Try Sutrisno passed away at RSPAD Gatot Subroto on the morning of Monday (2 March). The sixth Vice President of the Indonesian Republic from 1993–1998 had been receiving treatment at RSPAD since 16 February.

Try Sutrisno was laid out at a funeral home on Purwakarta Street Number 6 RT 08 RW 05, Menteng, Central Jakarta. Subsequently, his body was prayed over at the Grand Mosque of Sunda Kelapa, Central Jakarta, before finally being buried at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta.

During his military career, Try previously served as Head of the Army General Staff from 1986–1988 and as Commander of the Armed Forces of the Indonesian Republic from 1988–1993. Try was married to Tuti Sutiawati and was blessed with seven children consisting of four sons and three daughters.
