MPR Chairman Denies Impeachment Draft, Says Constitutional Amendment Talks Still Preliminary

People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Chairman Ahmad Muzani has stressed that there is currently no draft or specific article for amending the 1945 Constitution, thereby dismissing speculation linking the process to the impeachment of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. “There is no basis for it. There is none. There is not a single article regarding an amendment draft. There is absolutely nothing yet,” Muzani told reporters at the Constitutional Court (MK) building in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/7).

Muzani explained that discussions on the possibility of a constitutional amendment are still at the stage of gathering views and aspirations from various elements of society. He therefore stated that it was inaccurate to suggest that the MPR was preparing specific articles related to the vice president’s impeachment. He revealed that President Prabowo Subianto had also cautioned that any discussion on constitutional changes must be carried out carefully and inclusively. “The President warned us about this issue. I was asked to be careful, not to be rash or hasty, and to involve all elements of the nation,” he said.

Furthermore, Muzani noted that the MPR is not closing the door on the possibility of amending the 1945 Constitution in the future. However, formal deliberations can only proceed once all public aspirations have been gathered and studied in depth. “Therefore, once again, the MPR is not completely closing off the possibility of an amendment, although we are also not opening it wide. But we are listening to all views and aspirations,” he stated.

Muzani added that the MPR plans to meet with President Prabowo to align views on several strategic constitutional agendas currently being reviewed by the assembly. He reiterated that the President had advised that discussions on constitutional changes should be conducted prudently and without haste, based on the aspirations of the people and involving all national elements.
