MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani Calls for Peace During Khamenei Funeral Visit

People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Chairman Ahmad Muzani has shared details of his visit to attend the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Friday, 10 July 2026, a duty assigned by President Prabowo Subianto. He stated that following the funeral, he and the Indonesian delegation met with Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator with the United States, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. “I conveyed that Indonesia trusts Ghalibaf to be able to take action using reason, to stop the warfare,” Muzani said at the Supreme Court Building on Tuesday, 14 July 2026. He told Ghalibaf that the Indonesian nation deeply loves peace. With Ghalibaf’s capacity and competence, Indonesia hopes he can ease the tensions in the conflict between Tehran and Washington DC. On that occasion, Muzani added, Indonesia also expressed its condolences over the death of Ali Khamenei in an attack launched by the United States and its ally Israel at the end of February 2026. Indonesia, he said, truly feels what the Iranian people are experiencing, namely the loss of a deeply beloved leader. “We conveyed that the Indonesian nation prays for the Iranian people to remain steadfast in facing this calamity,” said the Gerindra Party politician. Muzani’s assignment to Khamenei’s funeral drew scrutiny due to his position. A number of academics and even the Deputy Speaker of the MPR assessed that Muzani, as MPR Chairman, should not be ordered by the President. This is because, in terms of position, the MPR as a branch of legislative power and the President as a branch of executive power hold equal standing and cannot order each other. However, Muzani explained that his position in this agenda was as an official envoy representing the state. “I was asked to depart representing the Indonesian nation as an envoy of the President,” Muzani said on 8 July 2026. He also claimed to understand the MPR’s position in relation to the executive branch. However, in this context, he said the President has special authority to assign someone to represent the country at global forums. “The Head of State has the authority to decide who is deemed fit to represent the country,” he said.
