MPR Backs US-Iran Peace Deal for Global Stability
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) M. Hidayat Nur Wahid supports the implementation of the peace agreement between the United States and Iran and encourages all parties to carry out the commitment consistently. This is to prevent a global crisis and refocus world attention on efforts to end the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza. In a written statement in Jakarta on Friday, Hidayat Nur Wahid said the peace initiative mediated by Pakistan, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia deserves appreciation because it opens opportunities to ease regional tensions that could affect global political and economic stability. “We certainly thank and highly appreciate the initiative of Pakistan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia which moved effectively so that the peace text could be agreed upon and signed,” he said. According to him, the implementation of the agreement must be a shared concern so that it does not stop at the signing alone. He also hopes that all parties actively oversee the implementation of the agreement according to the agreed stages. Hidayat said the consistency of the parties in carrying out peace is necessary to spare the world from the threat of a prolonged crisis, including the economic impact of disrupted international energy trade routes. “With the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, it is also important to be able to immediately lower world oil prices which heavily burden many countries, including Indonesia,” he said. He added that the easing of tensions between the United States and Iran should be a momentum to refocus international attention on resolving the conflict in Gaza and Palestine. “Indeed, Gaza/Palestine is not mentioned in the agreement, but it is important to be reminded that with the cessation of the US versus Iran war, a peace agreement that stops the tragedy in Gaza/Palestine is important to be realised immediately as well,” he said. According to Hidayat, efforts to bring comprehensive peace to the region must include the protection of civilians, enforcement of international law, and support for a just and sustainable conflict resolution. He also encouraged Indonesia to continue playing a diplomatic role in accordance with its constitutional mandate in supporting world peace. “The Indonesian government can also continue to play an important role in its foreign policy to create world peace and the independence of Palestine, while remaining focused on addressing domestic issues in Indonesia,” he said. Hidayat hopes the peace agreement can truly be implemented so that it contributes to regional stability, global economic recovery, and the creation of broader peace.
