MPR and Supreme Court Sign Agreement on Judicial Independence

The People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Supreme Court (MA) have signed an agreement to uphold the rule of law and ensure the independence of the judiciary remains intact. MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani stated that the first point of the agreement was a commitment to continuously uphold the supremacy of law. “Judicial independence is a way to continue strengthening Indonesia as a state of law,” Muzani said at the Supreme Court building in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, 14 July 2026. He added that the MPR respects the authority of the Supreme Court and will not interfere in the court’s internal affairs. Another point of the agreement saw both institutions commit to realising the national goals as stated in the preamble of the 1945 Constitution. Consequently, Muzani noted that the MPR and the Supreme Court agreed not to discuss any case matters during the meeting, whether cases being handled directly by the court or otherwise. “This is part of our respect for judicial independence,” Muzani stated. As the main objective of the National Gathering, Muzani also conveyed the MPR’s preparations for the Annual Session, which will be held before the Independence Day commemoration on 17 August. “Today we were received well and warmly by the leadership of the Supreme Court,” said the Gerindra Party politician. Muzani was accompanied by MPR Deputy Chairmen Rusdi Kirana and Abcandra Muhammad Akbar, as well as MPR Secretary General Siti Fauziah. From the Supreme Court leadership, Chief Justice Sunarto and Vice Chief Justice for Judicial Affairs Suharto accompanied the MPR delegation.
