MPR and Supreme Court Affirm Commitment to Upholding Rule of Law

The leadership of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Supreme Court (MA) have affirmed their commitment to upholding the rule of law through respect for the independence of the judiciary. This commitment was conveyed during a national gathering between the leadership of the MPR and the Supreme Court at the Supreme Court Building in Jakarta on Tuesday. “Because judicial independence is the way to continue strengthening Indonesia as a state of law, the rule of law and judicial independence are things we must continue to safeguard,” said MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani. During the meeting, Muzani stressed that the MPR respects the authority of the Supreme Court by not interfering in matters that fall within the domain of the judicial institution. “Both the MPR and the DPR are state institutions intended to realise our national goals, as stated in the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia,” he said. Muzani stated that the visit to the Supreme Court was part of the MPR’s series of national gatherings as well as consultations between leaders of state institutions ahead of the MPR Annual Session, which will be held before the commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia. “Today it is our turn to visit the Supreme Court and we were received well and warmly by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Deputy Chief Justices, and the Supreme Court justices,” he said. The MPR leadership’s visit was received by Chief Justice Sunarto, Deputy Chief Justice for Judicial Affairs Suharto, Supreme Court Secretary Sugiyanto, and other Supreme Court officials. Following the meeting with the Supreme Court, the MPR will continue its national gatherings with a number of state institutions and national figures, including the President, former presidents, and former vice presidents.
