Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Netty Prasetiyani Aher, has expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Health’s (Kemenkes) initiative to mandate nutri-level nutrition labelling on ready-to-eat foods, particularly sweetened beverages.

According to Netty, the policy outlined in Ministerial Decree Number HK.01.07/MENKES/301/2026 represents a strategic step in controlling excessive consumption of sugar, salt, and fat (GGL) in society.

“This is an important step in strengthening preventive approaches in the health sector. Education through simple and easy-to-understand labels will help the public make healthier consumption choices,” she stated, as quoted in Jakarta on Monday.

She also noted that the policy is highly relevant amid the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Indonesia, which significantly impacts national health financing.

Furthermore, Netty highlighted the surge in financing for kidney failure cases, which has risen by more than 400 percent in recent years. According to her, this surge is a strong indicator that controlling risk factors, such as GGL consumption, must be a priority.

Nevertheless, Netty cautioned that the policy’s effectiveness depends heavily on the quality of its field implementation. She pointed out that the nutri-level labelling mechanism, based on self-declarations by businesses, must be balanced with a strict and accountable monitoring system.

“Accuracy of information is crucial. The label, which should serve as an educational tool, must not create bias if not properly supervised,” she said.

In addition, Netty urged clarity on the implementation roadmap, including gradual expansion of the policy to wider business sectors, as well as strengthened public outreach.

“Without massive and consistent education, this policy will not be optimal. The public must truly understand the meaning of each level displayed,” she remarked.
