Jakarta (ANTARA) — Member of House of Representatives Commission XII, Beniyanto Tamoreka, has emphasised the importance of strengthening governance of the national nickel industry, particularly in the Morowali area of Central Sulawesi, to ensure downstream processing remains healthy, competitive and sustainable.

"Morowali has developed into one of the largest nickel industry centres in the world. The state therefore needs to ensure that the industrial ecosystem that has formed remains open, competitive, and delivers broad benefits for both the national and regional economies," Beniyanto said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.

Beniyanto said the nickel industrial zone has become the epicentre of Indonesia's strategic mineral development, requiring robust oversight and a balance between investment interests and national interests.

He stated that nickel downstream processing is a critical component of the broader strategy for economic transformation and national energy transition. However, the acceleration of smelter construction and industrial ecosystem development must be accompanied by principles of transparent governance, fair business competition, and regulatory certainty for all industry players.

Furthermore, Beniyanto assessed that strengthening cross-ministerial coordination, oversight of industrial structures, and improving sustainability standards are vital factors to ensure downstream processing is not solely oriented towards production volume, but also towards quality governance and long-term added value.

In this context, the House of Representatives will continue to exercise its oversight function to ensure downstream processing policies maintain a balance between industrial growth, environmental protection and public welfare.

Beniyanto also cautioned that Indonesia's position as a major player in the global critical minerals supply chain must be accompanied by a strong national strategy.

He argued that strengthening governance in nickel industrial zones is not merely a regional issue, but part of efforts to safeguard Indonesia's competitiveness amid the dynamics of energy geopolitics and global competition in the battery and electric vehicle sectors.

Commission XII of the House of Representatives, he continued, encourages all stakeholders to maintain investment climate stability whilst ensuring that nickel downstream processing proceeds in a fair, sustainable manner that delivers tangible benefits for national development.
