JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Member of the House of Representatives Commission V Sudjatmiko assessed that the Rp 4 trillion budget prepared by the government for handling level railway crossings is only sufficient for installing automatic barriers. He believes that this budget is not adequate for building flyovers or underpasses at level railway crossings located in areas with dense traffic. “If it’s for utilising and installing automatic barriers, it’s sufficient. But if it’s for making the crossings non-level, it’s definitely not enough,” said Sudjatmiko during a discussion at the House of Representatives building on Thursday (30/4/2026). In the short term, the government needs to accelerate safety measures through the installation of automatic barriers and the placement of guarding personnel. “The fastest way, we know that Mr Prabowo has issued presidential assistance for 1,800 crossings. This will be built soon, at the latest in six months. So it must be completed this year,” he said. “In the long term, for routes with high headway, especially national roads, they must use non-level crossings with flyovers and underpasses,” explained Sudjatmiko. According to Sudjatmiko, there needs to be an agreement between the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Transportation, and the Ministry of Public Works and People’s Housing (PUPR), considering that this infrastructure involves the authority of both central and regional governments. “This must be made into a joint agreement, who is responsible. Because these level crossings are infrastructure owned by the regions and the central government,” he concluded. For information, an accident between the KRL Commuter Line and the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek occurred at Bekasi Timur Station on Monday night (27/4/2026). This incident killed 15 people and injured dozens of others. The Minister of Transportation explained that the accident began when the KRL train on the Bekasi-Cikarang route hit a taxi at level crossing JPL 85. “Based on the initial chronology, the accident incident began when the KRL train on the Bekasi-Cikarang route hit a vehicle at level crossing JPL 85,” said Dudy.
