Jakarta (ANTARA) - Dini Rahmania, a member of Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), stated that Government Regulation (PP) Number 17 of 2025 on the Protection of Electronic System Governance in Child Protection (PP Tunas), which is set to take effect, represents an investment in the character of the nation’s future.

She views the policy of restricting social media use for children under 16 as a strategic step in safeguarding the quality of growth and development of Indonesia’s young generation.

“As a member of DPR RI Commission VIII and as a mother, I see this policy not merely as a restriction, but as a form of protection and a long-term investment in the future of our children,” Dini said in Jakarta on Sunday.

“We want Indonesian children to grow into a generation that is not only digitally intelligent but also strong emotionally, socially, and spiritually,” she added.

She believes that a child exposed to social media too early risks shifting core family values, reducing warm interactions, and weakening the formation of the child’s identity.

Therefore, she stated that the implementation of PP Tunas must restore the family’s role as the primary centre of education. According to her, children need more interaction with parents, learning values of affection, empathy, and responsibility in real life, not just the virtual world.

“The state is present to ensure our children do not lose their childhood behind screens. Let us make this moment to return children to the embrace of the family and the warmth of real social interactions,” she said.

Looking ahead, she believes that the quality of national leadership will be greatly determined by how we shape today’s generation.

She hopes that today’s children do not become a generation preoccupied with screens, but rather a generation present in the midst of society, building real relationships, and contributing to their surroundings.

“If from an early age children are guided with strong values, then we are preparing future leaders who are of integrity, character, and national spirit,” she said.

PP Tunas will take effect on 28 March 2026, and every digital business entity is required to comply with the provisions of the regulation. The rules limit children from high-risk digital platforms, with initial implementation applying to eight digital platforms: YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Threads, Instagram, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox.
