MP: Indonesia-Japan Cooperation Strengthens Regional Stability

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives Commission I, Amelia Anggraini, assesses that cooperation between the Republic of Indonesia (RI) and Japan in the defence sector has the potential to strengthen regional stability.

By building such strategic cooperation, according to her, Indonesia avoids being trapped in certain power blocs. Moreover, she stated that Indonesia remains consistent in implementing its free and active policy.

“This collaboration has the potential to strengthen regional stability, particularly in facing non-traditional challenges such as maritime security, sea lane protection, and hybrid threats,” said Amelia in Jakarta on Monday.

With advanced defence technology capabilities, she considers Japan an important partner in supporting the modernisation of defence equipment and the development of Indonesia’s defence human resources.

Therefore, she views this collaboration as a strong signal that Indonesia’s defence cooperation has entered a more advanced, measurable phase, oriented towards long-term national interests.

“It must be seen as a strategic step that reflects the increasingly close defence partnership between the two countries in the Indo-Pacific region,” she said.

“We both have agreed to promote substantive cooperation in the defence industry as well as in the development of personnel training between Indonesia and Japan, taking into account each country’s national interests,” said Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin when delivering a joint statement with Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi at the Ministry of Defence office in Central Jakarta on Monday.

According to Sjafrie, cooperation in the defence industry with Japan is a strategic step because it will impact the strengthening of the domestic defence industry.
