JAKARTA - A member of Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Irma Suryani Chaniago, has demanded that the case of the death of intern doctor dr Myta Aprilia Azmy, who was undertaking her internship at RSUD KH Daud Arif in Jambi, be processed through legal channels.

“If the results of that investigation are true, then there must be accountability and it must be brought to the legal route because a life has been lost,” said Irma when contacted on Friday (8/5/2026).

The investigation she referred to is the one conducted by the Indonesian Ministry of Health, which uncovered the chronology of events experienced by dr Myta before her death, as well as the fact that there were no days off for intern doctors.

The NasDem Party politician also questioned the role of the supervising doctors and the hospital management, which she deemed negligent in monitoring the condition of the intern doctors.

Irma emphasised that the case cannot be considered mere ordinary negligence, as it has resulted in a fatality.

“Criminal legal sanctions are needed because the victim died due to forced labour,” said Irma.

“This is no longer just negligence, but it amounts to ‘slavery’,” she added.

“This must serve as a precedent for all hospitals and supervising doctors. Supervising doctors have an obligation to pay attention to the health and working hours, rather than exploiting them,” she concluded.

The death of an intern doctor who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Sriwijaya University (Unsri), dr Myta Aprilia Azmy, has left grief and raised major questions about the working conditions of young doctors in the field.

Starting her internship in August 2025, Myta is suspected to have been given an excessive workload and inhumane treatment during her duties, until she fell ill and passed away on Friday (1/5/2026).

She was carrying out her duties as an intern doctor (internship) at the Kuala Tungkal Regional General Hospital (RSUD) KH Daud Arif, West Tanjung Jabung Regency, Jambi.

On 27 April 2026, Myta was rushed to Dr Mohammad Hoesin Hospital in Palembang and treated in the infectious isolation ward before being moved to the ICU as her breathing condition worsened.
