JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Member of House of Representatives Commission III Soedeson Tandra assesses that the recommendation from the Police Reform Acceleration Commission to position the Indonesian National Police (Polri) directly under the President is already appropriate.

“The police perform unique functions. They carry out some legislative functions and some judicial functions. Therefore, its place is rightly under the President, as it relates to our presidential system of government,” Soedeson told Kompas.com on Wednesday (6/5/2026).

He argues that the presidential system indeed places the hierarchy as it currently exists.

In his view, compared to changing the organisational structure or institutional position, Soedeson believes the biggest challenge for Polri now is to improve its organisational culture or ethos.

He emphasises the importance of recruitment and budget transparency.

“They must be educated; we need to improve recruitment, transparency in placements, transparency in policies, and budget transparency,” he stated.

He affirms that Polri is an institution directly under the President of the Republic of Indonesia.

Yusril ensures that Polri will not be under any ministry and is directly accountable to the President.

“The position of Polri remains as it is now. Polri is directly under the President and no Ministry of Security or Ministry of Police will be established,” Yusril said in a press conference at the Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday (5/5/2026).
