The Indonesian mining industry holding company, MIND ID, is driving a change in the direction of the national mining industry. MIND ID does not want Indonesia’s mineral wealth to stop at the activities of extraction and commodity sales.

Selly Adriatika, Division Head of Institutional Relations at MIND ID, stated that Indonesia’s mineral and coal wealth must serve as the foundation for national industrialisation. The management of natural resources needs to be directed towards generating greater added value for the economy.

“What we want to achieve is how all of Indonesia’s natural resource wealth can be optimised to strengthen economic sovereignty,” Selly said in Jakarta.

According to her, MIND ID needs to strengthen domestic mineral processing to produce products and raw materials that meet the needs of national industry. This step opens opportunities for Indonesia to transform from a commodity-exporting nation into an industrial nation integrated with its own natural resources.

MIND ID is also encouraging strategic partnerships with industrial players and international investors. Such partnerships are necessary to accelerate technology mastery while expanding market access for products resulting from Indonesian mineral downstreaming.

According to Selly, the creation of new economic growth engines must be achieved through the integration of various strategic mineral value chains. With this approach, the mining sector can develop into a connected and strengthening industrial ecosystem.

“The government has tasked MIND ID with ensuring that Indonesia’s mineral wealth does not stop at the extraction process,” she added.

Indonesia possesses significant capital to carry out this transformation. Based on data from the Geological Agency, Indonesia holds approximately 42 per cent of the world’s nickel reserves, the largest tin reserves in the world, and ranks among the countries with the largest reserves of bauxite, gold, copper, and coal globally.

However, mineral and coal reserves are finite natural resources that will not increase. Therefore, their management must be directed towards generating higher added value and providing broader economic benefits for the community.

MIND ID has also been mandated to strengthen the control of strategic natural resources as an extension of the government. This control includes efforts to take over strategic mineral and coal reserves held by foreign entities so that the benefits can be more optimal for national interests.
