Movement leader dies from wound

NABIRE, Irian Jaya (JP): An alleged mob leader identified as
Willem Manimwarba died on Friday, a day after being shot in a
drive-by.

Phil Karel Erary, an advisor to the province's State Minister
for Human Rights Office, told The Jakarta Post that Willem died
while under medical treatment at the Sri Wini Hospital. Serious
bleeding from a gunshot wound in his leg was the cause of
Willem's death, Karel said.

The attackers reportedly rode an ambulance during the dawn
attack which occurred at Oyehe subdistrict.

Willem was allegedly leading 2,000 people to attack a police
station on Wednesday in protest of the death of fellow Irianese
Manase Erary in a previous fray here.

No official confirmation of the shooting of Willem was
available, but provincial police deputy chief Col. Thamrin
Simanjuntak said Willem had been involved in a series of crimes.

The killing of Willem brings the death toll in several days of
unrest here to four. Two civilians, Maximus Bunay and Dapius
Sani, died in Wednesday's incident. (eba/edt)
