Mount Slamet showing activity

PEMALANG, Central Java: The 3,428-meter-high Mt. Slamet,
located close by, has been extra active lately and the local
authorities have said that it warrants serious attention.

A tremor on Friday reached one point on the Richter scale,
though none of the local residents realized it, Mulyono, an
official of the volcanic supervision office, told Antara.
Dark smoke soared 150 meters over neighboring areas after the
tremor, he said. The cloud was seen clearly because of the good
weather that morning, Mulyono said.

He said that the tremors recorded during the last 30 days show
that the mountain's activities were above normal.

"But the frequency of the tremors is uncertain and range
between 16 and 58 times a day," he said. (tis)
