Mount Sinabung Erupts, Volcanic Ash Covers Berastagi

Volcanic ash resulting from the eruption of Mount Sinabung covered several areas in Berastagi, Karo Regency, North Sumatra, on Monday (31/08/2026). This condition has prompted residents and road users to increase vigilance against the impacts of volcanic ash.

The North Sumatra Provincial Education Office’s Regional Branch IV has urged students and teachers in the affected areas to wear masks to anticipate exposure to volcanic ash, which can disrupt health, particularly the respiratory system.

The Head of the Karo Regional Branch IV of the Education Office, Zulkarnain Barus, stated in Kabanjahe on Monday that the safety and health of students and educators are priorities amidst the increasing volcanic activity of Mount Sinabung.

“In connection with Mount Sinabung erupting again and releasing volcanic ash, we urge all school members, from early childhood education (PAUD), primary, junior high, to senior high/vocational schools in the affected areas, to always wear masks when performing outdoor activities,” he said.

In addition to wearing masks, schools, students, and educational staff are advised to increase vigilance and maintain cleanliness to reduce the risk of volcanic ash exposure.

Zulkarnain also requested that schools follow the latest information and directives from the authorities regarding Mount Sinabung’s activity.

This appeal was issued as an anticipatory measure to ensure that educational activities continue while prioritising the safety and health of the school community.

Meanwhile, residents in the eruption-affected areas are also asked to remain vigilant regarding volcanic ash and to use masks, especially when engaging in outdoor activities.

The public is advised to follow instructions from officials and avoid approaching areas designated as danger zones.

Mount Sinabung in Karo Regency erupted again on Monday at approximately 10:17 WIB. An ash column was observed rising to about 3,500 metres above the peak.

Volcanic ash was seen covering several road sections and vehicle surfaces in the Berastagi area. This condition has caused air quality to decline and visibility to become limited in several locations, particularly during the ashfall.
