Mount Semeru has been recorded as Indonesia’s most active volcano in 2026, with 1,263 eruptions logged from 1 January to 16 June, according to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ MAGMA website. Mount Ibu followed with 930 eruptions, while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki recorded 215 eruptions over the same period. Volcanic smoke was observed billowing from Semeru’s crater in Candipuro District, Lumajang, East Java, on Tuesday, as residents participated in the Grebeg Suro procession in Sumbermujur Village against the backdrop of the active volcano.
