Mount Semeru Erupts, Spewing 1,000-Metre Ash Column
Several volcanoes experienced eruptions today, Sunday (6/9/2026). According to a post on the X account of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Mount Semeru also erupted at 07:51 WIB.
“The height of the ash column was observed at approximately 1,000 m above the peak. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 mm and a duration of 102 seconds,” the Geological Agency wrote.
Prior to the Mount Semeru eruption, Mount Ili Lewotolok also erupted at 06:11 WITA, with an ash column reaching approximately 400 metres above its peak.
It is noted that these eruptive incidents have been occurring in succession. Anak Krakatau volcano has been erupting since Friday (4/9) night and was reported to have ceased on Sunday morning at 00:04 WIB.
Nevertheless, the volcanic ash plumes have drifted towards several regions, including Jakarta and Banten. The public has been advised to limit outdoor activities and use face masks.
