Mount Semeru Closed Completely Due to Forest Fires, Thousands of Climbers Unable to Ascend

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (BB TNBTS) has closed the Mount Semeru climbing route due to forest and land fires (Karhutla) in the Ranu Kembang Block area.

According to reports on Monday (31/08/2026), this policy directly impacts thousands of prospective climbers who had planned trips to the highest peak on Java island, with the closure remaining in effect for an indefinite period. Data shows that all affected climbers were originally scheduled to undertake climbing activities between 27 August and 2 September 2026.

Endrip Wahyutama, Public Relations Officer for BB TNBTS, confirmed the specific number of visitors unable to climb due to the incident. Endrip stated that 1,235 climbers were unable to proceed with their ascent.

“The impact affects 162 groups, consisting of 1,217 Indonesian citizens and 12 foreign nationals,” said Endrip when confirmed.

BB TNBTS is facilitating two solution schemes for ticket holders: the option for a full refund or a reschedule without additional charges. Refund amounts will be transferred directly to the visitors’ accounts, with an estimated processing time of 3 to 14 working days once data verification is complete.

For visitors choosing the rescheduling option, BB TNBTS is offering a new visiting period from 15 September to 30 November 2026. However, management is implementing strict regulations to prevent ticket misuse.
