Mount Rinjani savannah areas highly susceptible to fires during dry season

The Mount Rinjani National Park Agency has stated that all forest and savannah areas around Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara are in a condition highly susceptible to fire during the dry season. “A single small spark can develop into a widespread fire that threatens biodiversity, water sources, and the safety of the community and visitors,” said Head of the Mount Rinjani National Park Agency Budy Kurniawan in a written statement in Mataram on Thursday. He said that as the dry season sets in, his office is urging all residents, tourism operators, trekkers and visitors to the area not to burn land or residual vegetation and not to carelessly discard cigarette butts. Furthermore, all visitors or members of the public are expected not to light any source of fire without supervision and to report immediately if they see smoke, hotspots, or indications of fire inside or around the forest area. “Protecting Rinjani is not just the duty of officers, but a shared responsibility,” Budy said. He said that the care and vigilance of every person is the main key in preventing forest fires and preserving nature in the Mount Rinjani area of Lombok for future generations. “Because one act of negligence can reduce thousands of hopes to ashes,” Budy said. Entering the 2026 dry season, a forest fire occurred in the Propok Savannah area, Aikmel Resort, Mount Rinjani National Park, on Tuesday 2 June 2026. Then a land fire occurred in the Bukit Sempana area of Sembalun Bumbung Village on 9 June 2026 and officers have carried out efforts to handle the forest and land fires.
