Mount Rinjani National Park on Fire, Officials Struggling to Extinguish Flames

The Savana Propok area of Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), caught fire on Tuesday (2/6/2026). The affected area is a non-climbing tourist zone.

According to monitoring by the TNGR National Park Management Section (SPTN) Region II, the fire first appeared around 11:00 WITA near the Savana 2 campsite. The flames subsequently spread to the Savana 1 campsite area.

“The fire then expanded to reach the Savana Propok 1 area, which is dominated by dry savannah vegetation,” explained the Head of SPTN TNGR Region II, Ma’ruf Hadi, when contacted on Tuesday (2/6/2026) evening.

Officers from TNGR, alongside the managers of Savana Propok, have been attempting to extinguish the hotspots. However, all fire points have not yet been controlled due to limitations in personnel, logistics, and firefighting equipment. As of 19:00 WITA, the fire remained active in several areas.

“Given that it is now night with very limited lighting, and considering the safety of the personnel on duty, firefighting activities have been temporarily halted and will resume tomorrow morning,” added Ma’ruf.

Ma’ruf urged visitors and the public to increase vigilance regarding the potential for forest fires, especially as the dry season has begun. The increasingly dry vegetation during this season makes forest and savannah areas more vulnerable to fire.

“We hope the community will avoid activities that have the potential to trigger fires, such as land clearing by burning, burning vegetation remains, and discarding cigarette butts carelessly,” Ma’ruf pleaded.
