Mount Rinjani Climbing Restricted to Prevent Forest Fires
Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) has restricted climbing activities on Mount Rinjani, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), effective from Tuesday (1/9/2026). The restriction is being implemented to prevent forest and land fires (karhutla).
This policy follows the Circular Letter from the Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation, Ministry of Forestry, Number SE.4/KSDAE/SKSDAE/KSA.02.02/08/2026, regarding the temporary closure and limited opening of mountain climbing tourism to prevent forest fires.
According to the official announcement issued by TNGR, the limited opening includes climbing tourism, rituals, religious, cultural, social, and research activities.
During this period of limited access, TNGR will conduct socialisation for the public, prospective climbers, and tourism service providers regarding the vulnerability to forest fires. Additionally, patrols and inspections of belongings that could potentially serve as fire sources will be tightened.
TNGR will also increase its preparedness for forest fire management. This includes the readiness of personnel and infrastructure, as well as coordination with local governments, BNPB, BPBD, the TNI/Polri (Military/Police), the community, and relevant stakeholders.
The Head of the TNGR Administrative Sub-division, Astekita Ardiariente, stated that during this restriction, online booking services via the e-Rinjani application will be temporarily suspended. Online booking services will reopen once the forest fire risk is declared safe.
“Bookings that have been made and paid for before that date can still be serviced as usual, in accordance with applicable regulations. However, the booking service is temporarily closed,” Astekita explained when contacted by detikBali on Tuesday (1/9/2026).
Astekita further explained that ticket bookings for Mount Rinjani are conducted exclusively online. During this restriction, the climbing quota remains unchanged and has not been reduced.
“There is no reduction in quota; we are only temporarily closing the online booking. Climbing ticket bookings are only done online,” she added.
