Mount Merapi spews ash

YOGYAKARTA: Mount Merapi has spewed volcanic ash at least twice during the past three days but no injuries have been reported, a local official said.

Badarudin of the directorate general of volcanology said that the volcanic ash dropped far from residential areas.

The volcano, one of the most active in Indonesia, erupted in November, killing more than 50 people and displacing hundreds of residents from nearby villages.

Local officials have warned residents to stay alert for a possible major eruption as the 3,962 meter high volcano remains highly active.

"People should be wary of lava floods from the top of the mountain when it rains," Badarudin said, the Antara news agency reported.(pan).
