Mount Merapi, located on the border of Yogyakarta and Central Java, has erupted, unleashing a pyroclastic flow that travelled 2,000 metres. The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources reported that the activity occurred on Friday (28/8/2026) at 21.22 WIB, with the flow moving towards the southwest. “The estimated slide distance is 2,000 m with a maximum amplitude of 87.74 mm and a duration of 116.97 seconds, heading towards the southwest (upper reaches of the Sat/Putih River),” the Geological Agency stated. The public has been urged to stay away from danger zones and river channels that originate on Mount Merapi, and to comply with official recommendations. “Mount Merapi’s current activity level is SIAGA (Level III). Continue to follow the recommendations,” it added.
