Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Erupts on Thursday Morning

The eruption occurred at approximately 10:34 local time, with the eruption reaching an altitude of approximately 2,384 metres above sea level.

Kupang (ANTARA) - The Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki monitoring post in Wulanggitang District, East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, erupted on Thursday morning, spewing ash approximately 800 metres high from the peak of the mountain.

The officer in charge of the Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki monitoring post, Herman Yosef S Mboro, in a report received in Kupang on Thursday, said that this eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 11 millimetres and a duration of approximately 3 minutes and 57 seconds.

“The eruption occurred at approximately 10:34 local time, with the eruption reaching an altitude of approximately 2,384 metres above sea level,” he said.

Currently, he said, the status of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is still at Alert Level III.

He issued recommendations for residents in the surrounding area, including advising people around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a radius of five kilometres from the centre of the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki eruption.

In addition, people affected by the ashfall from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki are advised to wear masks or mouth and nose coverings to avoid the dangers of volcanic ash to the respiratory system.

The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) will always coordinate with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of East Nusa Tenggara and the local Disaster Management Task Force (PB) in providing information about the activities of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.
