Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts This Afternoon, Spewing 2.5 km Ash Column

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), erupted again at around 11:15 Wita on Friday (5/6/2026). Herman Yosep S Mboro, an officer at the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki observation post, stated that the eruption produced an ash column with a height of 2.5 kilometres above the summit, or more than 4 kilometres above sea level. The ash column was observed to be grey in colour with a thick intensity, leaning towards the west and northwest. “This eruption was recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 29.6 mm and a duration of approximately 2 minutes and 17 seconds,” Herman said in a statement. Herman urged the public and anyone near the volcano, which is on level III (alert) status, not to undertake any activities within a radius of 5 kilometres from the eruption centre. Residents around the mountain were also asked to be vigilant for the potential of rain lava floods on rivers originating at the peak of the mountain if high-intensity rainfall occurs. “Especially in the areas of Dulipali, Padang Pasir, Nobo, Nurabelen, Klatanlo, Hokeng Jaya, Boru, and Nawakote,” he added. Herman recommended that communities affected by ash rain wear masks or nose-mouth coverings to avoid the danger of volcanic ash to the respiratory system.
