Mount Karangetang Eruption Hurls Incandescent Material

The head of the Mount Karangetang Volcano Observation Post, Yudia T Tatipang, reported that an eruption of Mount Karangetang on Siau Island caused incandescent material to be hurled around the crater. “A fairly strong explosive eruption occurred this evening, which was then followed by the ejection of incandescent material around the crater,” he stated on Sunday evening. Mount Karangetang is located on Siau Island, Sitaro Islands Regency, North Sulawesi. Yudia explained that the ejected incandescent material subsequently ignited the cogon grass surrounding the crater. “The flames then reflected off the clouds, making the fire appear large. The eruption was directed towards the north,” he added. “Following the eruption, we have deployed personnel in the field to monitor for any occurrence of incandescent lava flows,” he said. He confirmed that the status of Mount Karangetang remains at Level II (Alert). “We urge residents to continue complying with the issued recommendations to prevent any undesirable incidents,” Yudia appealed. Mount Karangetang on Siau Island is estimated to have erupted at around 7:14 pm Central Indonesian Time.
