Mount Gede Pangrango hiking trails closed for a week due to JOTR event

The Mount Gede Pangrango National Park (TNGGP) authority is closing all hiking and tourist trails from 23 to 29 July 2026, as the routes will be used exclusively for the Jakarta Open Trail Run (JOTR) championship and a series of events under the South East Asia Trail Running Confederation.

TNGGP public relations officer Agus Deni stated on Monday that the temporary closure for general hikers and tourists to various destinations within the park is based on Circular Letters Number 11 and 12 of 2026. No rescheduling or refunds will be offered to hikers, as online registration had not yet opened during that period. Prospective hikers and tourists are advised to register after the JOTR event concludes.

He explained that the international-scale activity will take place over seven days, with participants from both domestic and abroad using the Mount Gede-Pangrango hiking trails. In preparation, the TNGGP authority will repair several facilities damaged along the trails due to the actions of irresponsible hikers, ensuring they can be used in the long term.

"We recommend that prospective hikers and tourists register online after the event ends. During the trail closure, strict supervision will be carried out by officers, including the involvement of local communities," he said. He expressed hope that no hikers or tourists would commit violations during the closure, as firm sanctions will be applied, particularly for hikers who will be placed on a nationwide blacklist for all national parks in Indonesia.
