Mount Cikuray in Garut Catches Fire, 5 Hectares of Perhutani Land Destroyed

A land fire has struck the Mount Cikuray area in Cikajang District and the slopes of Mount Guntur in Tarogong Kaler District, Garut Regency, West Java. Five hectares of land belonging to Perhutani are reported to have been destroyed by the flames.

A joint team carried out firefighting efforts to prevent the blaze from spreading further and damaging the environment and residential areas. “The joint team then carried out firefighting in stages using the available equipment,” said Head of Public Relations of Garut Police, Ipda Susilo Adhi, in Garut on Sunday (6/9/2026).

He said the land fire occurred at six points in Rancabango Village, Tarogong Kaler District, which was first discovered on Saturday (4/9/2026) afternoon. The fire then spread to the foothills of Mount Cikuray, Mekarjaya Village, Cikajang District, Garut, on Saturday (5/9/2026) evening, with the affected area within the Perhutani zone covering approximately five hectares.

He said the team involved personnel from the police, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Fire Department (Disdamkar) and other relevant agencies, working to extinguish the fire on a priority scale in areas close to residential settlements. “Points located near residential areas are a priority to prevent the fire from spreading and endangering the public,” he said.

He said the team carried out firefighting in the Mount Guntur area manually using portable spray equipment and firebreaks, because access to the location could not be reached by fire engines. By Saturday evening, he said, the fire had been brought under control and was confirmed not to have spread closer to residential areas, although monitoring continued in case the fire reignited.

“We are also continuing to monitor all points to anticipate the re-emergence of hotspots or the possibility of the fire spreading to other areas,” said Susilo Adhi.

As for the fire at the foot of Mount Cikuray in Cikajang District, he continued, it was successfully extinguished just before midnight by localising the blaze, creating a boundary around the fire’s edge using soil to prevent it from spreading. He said the distance from the fire location to residential areas was quite far, reachable only on foot in about two hours over fairly risky terrain.

“The cause of the fire is still unknown and is still being recorded,” said Susilo Adhi.
