According to official information from the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (BB TNBTS), the Mount Bromo tourist area will close completely from all tourism activities during the celebration of Nyepi, the Hindu New Year of Saka 1948.

The closure is implemented fully as a mark of respect for Hindu devotees, particularly the Tengger ethnic community who are observing Catur Brata Penyepian (the ritual of silence and fasting) in the area.

According to Antara News, the closure decision announced on Friday (13 March 2026) encompasses all entry points to the Bromo caldera, whether via the Probolinggo route (Cemoro Lawang), Pasuruan route (Wonokitri), or the route from Malang and Lumajang (Jemplang).

For a full 24 hours, this iconic area in East Java will remain completely quiet without the traffic of Jeeps or the crowds of tourists.

Beyond honouring local traditions, this period of “rest” also provides a valuable opportunity for the Bromo ecosystem to recover without noise pollution and vehicle emissions before being crowded again with visitors.

“We are closing the Bromo area on 19-20 March 2026 (Nyepi Holy Day) completely. We will reopen on 21 March 2026,” said Septi Eka Wardhani, Head of National Park Management Division Region I of BB TNBTS, in Malang City, East Java, on Friday (13 March).

What about the Eid Al-Fitr holiday this year?

Do not worry. For those planning to visit or take a family holiday to East Java, Bromo is assured to reopen normally immediately after the Nyepi observances conclude.

On Eid Al-Fitr day, the BB TNBTS will commence operations following the Eid prayer.

However, this is still pending government decisions regarding the schedule for Eid Al-Fitr 1447 AH.

Given that the Eid holiday typically represents peak season, park management urges prospective visitors to book tickets online well in advance through the BB TNBTS official website.

“If Eid Al-Fitr falls on 21 March 2026, we will open for half a day. But after that, we will open from early morning until five in the afternoon,” she said.

To manage the expected surge in tourists during the Eid Al-Fitr holiday, ensure you also book Jeep services and accommodation from now to avoid running out of vehicles or lodging.

Remember to be a responsible tourist by not littering and always following the instructions of field officers.

So, although Bromo takes a brief rest during Nyepi, its beauty will remain ready to welcome you and your family to celebrate Eid Al-Fitr with spectacular natural scenery.
