Mount Anak Krakatau Volcanic Activity Increases, Residents Urged to Remain Vigilant

Volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait, South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province, has increased in recent days. Coastal residents, fishermen, and tourists are being urged to heighten their vigilance and stay away from the danger zone.

Suwarno, head of the Mount Anak Krakatau Observation Post in Hargopancuran, Rajabasa District, said the increase in activity was detected through visual observation and seismicity recorded by volcano monitoring equipment.

“Currently, Mount Anak Krakatau is still showing quite high volcanic activity, so the public is advised to remain alert and not approach the area designated as a danger zone,” Suwarno said in South Lampung on Wednesday (24/6).

According to him, monitoring of Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity is carried out intensively 24 hours a day. The monitoring aims to detect developments in the volcano’s activity and serve as a basis for mitigation measures to reduce disaster risk.

Monitoring results show that seismic activity and gas emissions are still being recorded by monitoring devices. These conditions indicate that volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau is ongoing.

Suwarno reminded residents, tourists, and fishermen not to conduct activities within the radius recommended by volcanological authorities. The advisory was issued to avoid the risk of eruption or ejection of volcanic material.

“Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level II, or Alert status. Fishermen and tourists are asked not to approach within a two-kilometre radius of the Mount Anak Krakatau crater,” he stated.

Fishermen operating in the waters around the Sunda Strait are also urged to continuously monitor information updates regarding Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity and weather conditions before going to sea.

Furthermore, the public is advised not to be easily influenced by unverified information. Suwarno emphasised that residents should refer to information provided by authorised agencies.

Through continuous monitoring, it is hoped that potential risks from Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity can be anticipated early, ensuring public safety is maintained.
