Mount Anak Krakatau Status Downgraded from Alert to Caution
The status of Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK) has been downgraded from Level III (Alert) to Level II (Caution) as of 18:30 WIB on Monday (21/9).
“The activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau volcano has been lowered from Level III (Alert) to Level II (Caution) effective from 21 September 202long 6 at 18:30 WIB, with recommendations set at Level II (Caution),” stated Lana Saria, Head of the Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in an official statement.
Special report number 1604.Lap/GL.03/BGL/2026 indicates that continuous monitoring is being conducted by the observation post in Kalianda, South Lampung Regency, and the Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post in Pasauran, Serang Regency, Banten.
Although the status of Mount Anak Krakatau has decreased, the public is still prohibited from approaching the Type A active volcano within a 2-kilometre (km) radius.
“Visitors, tourists, and hikers are not permitted to enter or conduct activities within a 2 km radius of the centre of Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity, and must increase vigilance against the threats of volcanic rock fragments and heavy ashfall,” she added.
Mount Anak Krakatau was raised to Level III status on 2 July 2026. Since then, the volcano has experienced 224 eruptions up until 3 September 2026.
Activity intensified between 4 September 2026 at 23:07 WIB and 6 September 2026 at 00:04 WIB, during which continuous eruptions occurred for 25 hours.
Based on satellite imagery data, these continuous eruptions produced lava flows moving towards the northwest, west, and southwest from the centre of the eruption.
Activity at Mount Anak Krakatau has shown a downward trend until 20 September 2026 at 00:00 WIB.
Seismic records for Mount Anak Krakatau on 20 September 2026 showed one instance of a Low Frequency earthquake and continuous tremors with an average amplitude of 2 mm.
“The activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau will be re-evaluated periodically or if significant changes in activity occur,” said Lana.
