Mount Anak Krakatau Remains on Alert Status

The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has urged the public to remain vigilant as volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau persists at Level III, or Alert status. The volcano is located in the Sunda Strait, on the border between South Lampung, Lampung, and Banten.

Deny Mardiono, an officer at the Mount Anak Krakatau Observation Post of the PVMBG Geological Agency, stated that both visual and seismic activity at the active volcano continues to be recorded. Based on observations made on Wednesday, 8 July, from 12:00 to 18:00 WIB, smoke emissions from the active crater were observed rising to heights of tens of metres.

“Visually, the volcano is clearly visible until it becomes covered in fog. Weak pressure crater smoke is observed to be white with moderate to thick intensity, reaching 10 to 100 metres above the crater peak,” he said. He added that seismically, the volcanic monitoring authorities detected continuous tremor activity, or microtremors, indicating the movement of magma or fluids within the volcano’s body.

Meteorological conditions around the Mount Anak Krakatau area, which stands 157 metres above sea level, were reported as clear and cloudy. Air temperatures in the area ranged from 27.1 to 31.9 degrees Celsius, with humidity between 55 and 65 percent, and weak winds blowing towards the north and northwest.

He emphasised that although seismic activity and visual smoke emissions continue above the crater peak, the surface conditions and sea waves in the surrounding waters are monitored as calm. To anticipate potential eruption hazards, the Geological Agency has issued a recommendation for residents, visitors, tourists, and hikers not to approach the volcano or conduct activities within a three-kilometre radius of the active crater.
