Mount Anak Krakatau Erupts, Ash Column Reaches 200 Metres

Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait erupted on Wednesday (8/7/2026) at 11.47 WIB. The Geological Agency reported that the ash column reached approximately 200 metres above the summit, or around 357 metres above sea level.

The Head of the Geological Agency’s Volcano Working Group, Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari, stated that the eruption produced a thick grey-to-black ash column moving northwest.

“An eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, Lampung, occurred on 8 July 2026 at 11.47 WIB, with the observed ash column height approximately 200 metres above the peak,” said Heruningtyas.

According to Heruningtyas, the eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 50 millimetres and a duration of around 42 seconds.

Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III, or Alert status. The Geological Agency has urged the public, tourists, and hikers not to approach the mountain and to refrain from any activities within a three-kilometre radius of the active crater.

“The public should not approach Mount Anak Krakatau,” Heruningtyas said.

The Geological Agency stated that monitoring of Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity continues in order to anticipate developments in volcanic activity.
