Mount Anak Krakatau Erupts Again, Alert Status Maintained — Public Urged to Keep Away

The volcano monitoring team of the Geological Agency at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) reported that Mount Anak Krakatau erupted again on Tuesday afternoon, 8 September 2026. As of now, Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III, or Alert status.

“An eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in Lampung occurred on 8 September 2026 at 11:34 WIB (Western Indonesia Time), although the height of the eruption column could not be observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 50 mm and a duration of approximately 17 seconds,” according to the Geological Agency’s volcano monitoring team report.

“Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at Level III status (Alert). It is recommended that residents, visitors, tourists and climbers do not approach Mount Anak Krakatau or conduct activities within a 3 km radius of the active crater,” the Geological Agency stated.

Could the 2018 Event Repeat Itself?

The continuous eruptions of Mount Anak Krakatau since July 2026 have raised the question of whether there is potential for a repeat of the eruption that triggered a tsunami in 2018.

In response, the Geological Agency of the Ministry of ESDM affirmed that Mount Anak Krakatau’s current condition is not the same as its condition before the 2018 tsunami. The dimensions of the volcano’s body, which reformed after the 22 December 2018 eruption, remain relatively small.

“Based on evaluations to date, the dimensions of Mount Anak Krakatau’s body that reformed after the 22 December 2018 eruption are still relatively small and do not have the potential to collapse on a scale that could trigger a tsunami. Nevertheless, the development of its activity and morphological changes continue to be monitored intensively,” the Geological Agency wrote on its Instagram account on Tuesday (8/9/2026).

According to the Geological Agency, Mount Anak Krakatau currently remains at Level III (Alert) status. The agency has set a recommended radius of 3 kilometres from the centre of the volcano’s activity.

“Mount Anak Krakatau is currently still at Level III (ALERT) status with a recommended distance of 3 km from the centre of activity, which means the potential for eruption remains high. Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity is continuously monitored visually and instrumentally by PVMBG. An increase in activity is not determined by a single eruption or video, but by a range of monitoring parameters,” the Geological Agency emphasised.
