Mount Anak Krakatau Erupts 19 Times in June-July 2026, Status at Level III Alert
The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has recorded that Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait, South Lampung Regency, experienced 19 eruptions throughout the period of June to July 2026, with volcanic activity remaining at Level III (Siaga).
The head of the Mount Anak Krakatau monitoring post in Hargopancuran, Rajabasa District, South Lampung, Suwarno, stated on Monday that the increase in volcanic activity is being intensively monitored through both visual and instrumental observations to continuously assess the volcano’s development. He explained that monitoring results show seismic activity and gas emissions are still being recorded by the equipment, indicating that volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau is ongoing.
According to him, the increase in volcanic activity in early July prompted the Geological Agency to raise the status of Mount Anak Krakatau from Level II (Waspada) to Level III (Siaga). Nevertheless, the volcano’s activity remains within a category that can be monitored with the implementation of mitigation measures as recommended by the PVMBG.
Therefore, residents, tourists, and fishermen are advised not to conduct activities within the recommended radius set by the volcanology authorities to avoid risks posed by eruptions or the ejection of volcanic material. "Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III status; fishermen and tourists are asked not to approach within a two-kilometre radius of the crater," he said.
Additionally, fishermen operating in the waters around the Sunda Strait are urged to continuously monitor official updates regarding Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity and weather conditions before going to sea. He stressed that the public should not be easily influenced by unverified information and should only refer to official information provided by the authorised agencies.
