Mount Anak Krakatau Activity Increases, PVMBG Records 18 Eruptions
The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG) has reported that Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait has experienced at least 18 eruptions since 2 July 2026. Although volcanic activity has increased in recent days, the mountain’s status remains at Level III, or Alert.
Rio Bonik Situmorang, an officer at the Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post, stated that as of Sunday (12/7), no new eruptions had occurred. However, monitoring results have recorded 18 eruptions since the beginning of July.
‘There have been no eruptions today. However, in the preceding days starting from 2 July, approximately 18 eruptions were recorded up to yesterday,’ he said.
Rio explained that the activity characteristics of Mount Anak Krakatau continue to show dynamic conditions. Seismic intensity can increase during certain periods and then decrease at other times.
‘The last eruption successfully recorded by instruments occurred the previous night at around 23:34 Western Indonesia Time,’ he noted.
Meanwhile, visual observation of Mount Anak Krakatau from the Pasauran Observation Post in Banten has not been optimal because the summit area remains covered in fog.
To monitor the development of magma activity, the PVMBG continues 24-hour surveillance through the Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post. Monitoring is conducted using various volcanic instruments to detect changes in the mountain’s activity continuously.
‘The results of periodic evaluations by the volcanology expert team serve as the main reference in determining mitigation steps,’ he said.
The recommendations issued by the PVMBG remain in effect as long as Mount Anak Krakatau’s status is at Level III, or Alert. The public, tourists, and fishermen are asked not to enter or conduct activities within a three-kilometre radius of the active crater for safety reasons.
Furthermore, the public is urged to remain calm, follow directives from relevant authorities, and not readily trust unverified information regarding the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau.
