Mount Agung Climbing Routes Closed Until 2 July for Pujawali Ceremony

Climbing routes to the summit of Mount Agung in Karangasem, Bali, will be closed for a week from 26 June to 2 July 2026. The closure is linked to the upcoming pujawali or piodalan ceremony at Pura Pengubengan, Besakih.

The head of Pura Pengubengan Besakih, Jro Mangku Nyoman Artawan, stated that the temporary closure of the climbing routes has been widely publicised. This includes sending official letters to the Bali Provincial Climbing Forum and travel agents requesting them to postpone climbs during the pujawali at Pura Pengubengan Besakih.

“We sent official letters some time ago to all parties. We hope no climbers will be reckless,” Artawan said on Wednesday (24/6/2026).

Artawan revealed that the peak of the pujawali at Pura Pengubengan Besakih will take place on Monday (29/6). Meanwhile, the series of rituals has already begun since Friday (26/6).

“I hope all climbers will comply and that there will be no violations to prevent undesirable incidents. Let us respect one another,” Artawan stated.

“Please resume climbing after the pujawali is completed (3 July),” he added.

Artawan hopes the pujawali at Pura Pengubengan Besakih proceeds smoothly. Currently, the temple custodians are making various preparations to welcome the traditional ceremony.
