Motorola eyes CDMA deal

JAKARTA (JP): U.S. firm Motorola wants to supply wireless telecommunications networks, using code division multiple access (CDMA) technology, to Indonesian analog cellular mobile telecommunications operators.

The company said CDMA technology would enable operators to increase their analog cellular network capacity six to 10 times.

The government has already approved CDMA technology.

The system was developed in the U.S. and is being adopted around the world as the wireless industry standard to deliver digital cellular and personal communications services.

There are three Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) analog cellular telephone operators in Indonesia. They are PT Komselindo, PT Metrosel and PT Telesera.

They have decided to improve their AMPS service by upgrading to CDMA technology.

Komselindo, the largest AMPS operator, has chosen Lucent as its CDMA supplier.

Telesera and Metrosel will hold tenders to select their suppliers. (icn)
