Motorola-Electrindo tie-up

JAKARTA (JP): The Motorola Wireless Data Group has signed an agreement with PT Elektrindo Nusantara -- Indonesia's first wireless data network operator -- to provide a country-wide DataTAC 5000 system for two-way communications.

This agreement follows a decision made by the Ministry of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications to grant Elektrindo a license to operate a nationwide packet data wireless communication system.

The system will enable electronic fund transfer and point-of- sales transactions, such as on-line authorization of debit and credit cards. Motorola said the system will enable e-mail access, database access, automated dispatch and mobile filed maintenance for sales and technical support service without the need to connect to a telephone line.

The data system is scheduled to commence operation in greater Jakarta in the first quarter of this year and will later on be expanded to Bali, Batam, Medan in North Sumatra, Semarang and Yogyakarta in Central Java, Surabaya in East Java, and West Java. (09)
