JAKARTA — Tuti (45), a merchant operating near Jalan Raya Bekasi in Cakung, East Jakarta, has confirmed that motorcyclists driving against traffic frequently “play cat and mouse” with officers from the Transportation Department (Dishub) and police.

She noted that whilst authorities often patrol the road, motorcyclists resume driving against traffic as soon as officers leave the location.

“Officers are sometimes here, but as soon as Dishub or police are not around, riders go against traffic again. During the day there are usually fewer of them,” Tuti said when interviewed on Monday (2 March 2026). “In the morning there are more, by daytime they are rare. They also drive against traffic when there is congestion coming from the Bekasi direction towards Pulogadung,” she explained.

Meanwhile, the Head of Traffic Management Section at the East Jakarta Transportation Sub-office (Sudinhub), Prisno Jogiara, assured that his department together with the East Jakarta Traffic Unit continuously intercept riders driving against traffic.

He explained that several vehicles risk driving against traffic because of severe congestion extending all the way to Kolong Cakung underpass. As a result, some riders choose to use the opposing lane instead.

“The presence of traffic police and Dishub officers intercepting them causes them to seek alternative routes or turn around to the correct lane, so traffic to the Bekasi direction is not disrupted,” he said when contacted on Monday.

Jogiara added that congestion on Jalan Raya Bekasi in Cakung is triggered by the high volume of vehicles passing through, particularly at the Kolong Cakung intersection.

Earlier reports detailed several motorcyclists driving recklessly against traffic on Jalan Raya Bekasi from the Bekasi direction towards Pulogadung, East Jakarta, on Monday (2 March 2026).

Based on observations, at approximately 10:40 AM local time, several riders continued driving against traffic despite the lane being used by large trucks.

Such actions are considered hazardous to the safety of both the perpetrators and other road users.

Meanwhile, traffic flow from Pulogadung towards Bekasi was observed to be smooth. Conditions in the opposite direction were considerably congested.
