Motorcyclists flout flyover ban in West Jakarta, Sudinhub warns of danger and accidents
The desire to reach destinations faster has led many motorcyclists on Daan Mogot Road in West Jakarta to take a shortcut by using the Pesing flyover.
Despite clear no-entry signs for two-wheelers at both entrances to the flyover, many riders deliberately ignore the ban to avoid traffic on the lower road.
Wahyu, 29, an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver frequently stationed along Daan Mogot Road, admitted that such violations are common to bypass traffic under the flyover.
“I just want to get there faster. Down below, it’s congested with red lights and trains, but I don’t do that anymore since there have been so many fatal accidents,” Wahyu told Kompas.com at the scene on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
Opik, 36, another online motorcycle taxi driver, also complained about the chaotic traffic conditions on the lower road.
“From Jalan Panjang through Green Garden, there are already many vehicles here, and Daan Mogot is full. Plus, from Kapuk via Angke, it’s all trucks, so it definitely causes congestion,” Opik explained.
This situation is worsened by several U-turn points monitored by illegal traffic controllers, known as ‘pak ogah’, which further clog the roads.
“Now you have to U-turn at Angke; if you don’t, you can go straight but there are ‘pak ogah’, which also adds to the congestion,” Opik said.
Meanwhile, firefighting efforts at a plastic warehouse fire in Kapuk Poglar, Jalan Peternakan Raya, Kapuk have further exacerbated traffic congestion over the past week.
Despite many seeking shortcuts, some residents still choose to obey traffic regulations.
Ramedhan, 28, a Kebon Jeruk resident who regularly travels along Daan Mogot Road, refuses to use the flyover despite the congestion.
