Motorcyclist in Sleman Arrested for Damaging Railway Crossing Barrier While Intoxicated
A young man with the initials S (24) deliberately damaged a railway crossing barrier in Banyumeneng, Banyuraden, Gamping, Sleman. S has been detained by the police, and it was discovered that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Sleman Police Public Relations Head, Iptu Argo Anggoro, explained that the vandalism occurred on Sunday (9/8) at around 5.18 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. At that time, S was riding a motorcycle from the south and stopped at the crossing because a train was about to pass.
“While at the location, S allegedly went on a rampage and pulled the southern crossing barrier until it broke. After that, S left the location heading north,” Argo said when contacted on Monday (10/8).
“About 30 minutes later, S returned to the Banyumeneng Railway Crossing Post and challenged the officers. Upon learning of the incident, residents together with PT KAI officers contacted the Gamping Police. Officers then went to the location and detained S for further examination,” he added.
As a result of the incident, Argo stated, the southern crossing barrier at the Banyumeneng railway crossing was damaged or broken, with material losses estimated at Rp 2 million.
“(The perpetrator) is still being held at the Gamping Police station for further examination and investigation,” Argo revealed. “Based on the examination results, the perpetrator was found to be under the influence of alcohol when committing the vandalism.”
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Manager of KAI Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta, Feni Novida Saragih, explained that the damaged crossing barrier was located at JPL 734 in the Sleman area. Following the vandalism, officers immediately moved to repair the barrier, and it is now functioning as before.
Feni emphasised that her party is pursuing legal action by filing an official report with the police regarding this act of vandalism. “KAI Operational Area 6 has made an official report to the police so that it can be processed further according to regulations. Our field officers, especially security personnel and KAI infrastructure units, will also collaborate with the police for future preventive efforts,” Feni said in her statement.
In a video obtained by detikJogja, the man is seen riding his motorcycle without a helmet. He suddenly damaged the crossing barrier that was being closed. He even forcibly pulled the cable until it snapped.
