Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The highest gas emissions originate from land transportation such as cars and motorcycles, far exceeding those from sea, air, or rail vehicles. In his presentation at the launch of Grab Indonesia’s Green Steps Movement, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) explained that the energy sector is the largest contributor to emissions, accounting for 55.3%, with transportation making up 22% of that figure. Within transportation, AHY noted that land vehicles are the biggest contributors. “Of this 22% from transportation, 89% comes from where? Land. Land includes motorcycles and cars,” AHY stated on Monday (29/6). This makes green transportation essential. The goal is to reduce gas emissions and pollution. Furthermore, environmentally friendly transport will also lower transportation costs. Although there is a significant initial investment required to convert fossil fuel-based vehicles to battery power, he is confident that it will be more beneficial in the long term. Another aim is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. World oil prices can be very volatile due to wars in the Middle East, the largest source of this energy. The presence of electric vehicles can also drive the growth of the national industry, as imports of electric vehicles are still relatively high. “Driving national industrial growth. Is this important? So far, we have been importing a lot of electric vehicles. Is that right? Although some have also developed two-wheeled vehicles,” he explained. AHY also appreciated the steps taken by Grab Indonesia to reduce gas emissions and pollution. The company already has 28,000 electric vehicles and plans to increase this to 42,000 by the end of this year. “Aggressively and progressively, Grab Indonesia has targets to carry out electrification to reduce gas emissions and air pollution,” AHY said.
