Motorcycle thief beaten to a pulp after being spotted by residents in Duren Sawit

JAKARTA — A motorcycle thief was beaten by a mob after being spotted by residents in Klender, Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. In a video uploaded by the Instagram account @jakarta.terkini, the theft was captured by CCTV. The suspect, wearing white clothing and a cap, attempted to hot-wire the ignition of a motorcycle parked by the roadside. The accomplice who was waiting on another motorcycle fled, while the assailant was captured by residents who pursued him. A separate video shows the suspect kneeling on the asphalt, gripping a metal pole and insisting he would not be taken away by the crowd. The suspect resisted and struck one resident, injuring him. The enraged crowd then delivered blows and kicks to the suspect until he was battered. “Indeed, the suspect intended to steal from a security post, but he was spotted by residents,” Sutikno said when contacted by Kompas.com on Saturday, 7 March 2026. The suspect was captured by residents and taken to the Duren Sawit Police Station. He is currently detained at the Duren Sawit Police Station for further questioning. “We are charging him under theft with aggravating circumstances under Article 477 of the Indonesian Penal Code; the penalty is more than five years’ imprisonment. Further developments will be pursued,” said Sutikno.
